Highlights of my supervisor's speech following the defense of my second Ph.D. It illustrates well how metaphysical idealism is seen in academia today, and the challenges faced by those who, like me, aim to show that it is not only a respectable metaphysics, but the very best hypothesis for making sense of mind and world today. Id love to have a chat with you one day. I have come to many of the same conclusions as you have in just my own words. However, you are my type of mind to converse with that will perhaps attempt to bridge some of the same gaps. Im obviously not a career scientist/researcher - however, i have had a broad spectrum of life experiences/careers/insights and have been circling the same drain as you and had the same type ofbresult where this nature just found me as someone who was also materialistic 1st in the past I still remain analytical 1st, but i have also achieved a very expansive state of consciousness and feel like all the wisdom is a distant memory... something that is more in tune with nature than my subjective life. Love your talks. I heard you on Lex a while ago, but now i will start reading your books Sam Harris also did a great deal of helping speak to something natural within that made me research his works as well.

Deepack Chopra is the pioneer who merged spirituality with science. He is not only academically educated but also culturally educated. I have participated to many of his work shop. Some of it went over my head at that time 24 years ago but he knew so much but the culture wasn’t ready to digest that. Bernardo is another brilliant man that I respect and admire. His knowledge and sincerity and profound accessible language that he is using is phenomenal. Deepak and Bernardo are both unique and awaken people to different reality that has been lost. Thank you both!

My wife thinks I'm crazy but through psychedelic exploration I think basically the same thing. I'm just not academic enough to explain them with reason.

While I absolutely love this video, I also hate it. I have been off and on sitting down in a Google doc for the past 4 months typing out basically every that you are saying here. I thought I had come up with some novel idea guess I didn't. Simultaneously, I am also extremely excited that this video exists because it is a sort of verification that my ideas are correct. When two or more minds independently come up with the same idea I take it to be verification of their correctness. Very cool stuff, good to know I'm not the only one who believes this.

Physicists think that they have figured out everything. Find out that there is a flaw in their thinking. Very understandable but very disruptive. Interacting with them. I find that they simply walk away from the fundamental issues rather than deal with them. People like Bernardo had to keep hammering at them. Someone like me who spent his life in applied scientists doesn't have the CV for them to accept it. He does.

I don’t understand your distinction between your subjectivity and ‘Bernardo Kastrup’ . Isn’t the subjective self the personality? Much yoga thinking talks of the ‘sense of I’ being the obstacle that obscures reality. Also, if I get drunk and pass out or get a blow to the head my subjectivity shuts down. Isn’t it logical to assume that this subjectivity will similarly disappear when the brain dies? Yes, the whirlpool dissolves back into the lake but how can we believe that it will retain subjectivity and memories of the embodied state?

At the core of dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder) is not a "dissociation of consciousness", but rather a dissociation of the self or splitting of identity into distinct personality states. Dissociation of the self can result in altered states of consciousness, but that is a separate phenomenon.

Language, where it matters most is ontological, yes in a limiting case it acts instrumentally, but once we socialised by it, it reveals a world “Being” historically housed in it. We come to our very selves, when we are able to express a self already housed in the language we are socialised in to. This is why the immigrant can sometimes be a problem, kind of awkward, because he was not socialised via the same language. It matters not how well he has learned the language as an adult. To him this new language will be instrumental and much less ontological. But his off spring will be fully immersed,at an ontological level by their culture and his host culture. His pool of consciousness is language, which needs us collectively to reveal a world housed in it. Please read Martin Heidegger ❤

Consciousness at its fullest is “ mineness”, a very difficult, to achieve ,reflexive condition. Most of us exist at the level of “ themness”, where we just respond to the world as is the general case with our social linguistic matrix. When we go to bed at night, our thoughts are the thoughts one has in our culture, with its history. But the authentic “mineness” guys, have thoughts, that are being revealing itself, that are covered up from us inauthentic folk.Even the way this covering up happens is covered up to the inauthentic. This man’s job is release us from the grip that the current collective mode of revealing has on us. We need to see again that “being” is received by us, but not from another entity. Please read Hiedegger, as this consciousness he talks of is akin to “Being”.

If you do step out of you own, small mind, you’ll enter a world of intuition, puré observation and from this point of viwe you can connect with everything in the larger consciousness. I heard Chopra speak about non-duality. He spoke very clearly. The problem was that 90 percent of the talk was about himself and his accomplishments and only 10 percent was about the subject. The 10 percent that was about non-duality was very basic and dull. He added no insights to the conversation. I was very disappointed on the talk. I only learned that he was a very smart man and very knowledgeable about biology and chemistry. Is this what is meant by word salad? Sure, he is very smart and he makes sure you get this by his self reference but I don't think I could sit and listen to him for another hour ever again.

I agree with almost everything you’ve said - the 8 points indicated in your summary. (In fact, I’ve been saying essentially the same things for nearly three decades.) But I come to a slightly different conclusion regarding artificial sentience. I see a critical assumption in your argument that needs elaboration, and my version of this elaboration leads me to a different conclusion about sentience. Yes, “6. Living organisms are what these alters look like…” but your approach implies “only carbon-based biological life” whereas my approach does not. For all I know, there may be self-organizing silicone-based, or some other radically different type of “currently unknown-stuff-based” activity that can also serve as second-person appearances of dissociated islands of consciousness. I agree with you that digital simulations of life are not living, but artificially-created self-organizing material systems that are designed to receive inputs from the world and process that information into more or less intelligent embodied behavior might (for all I know) be sentient because it is probably something about the data-input/embodied-behavior that constitutes “what sentience looks like from a second-person perspective” - independent of what specific materials compose the system. (I have the vague impression that you might have said something similar in an interview that I saw so, ultimately, we might agree on this. My current reaction is limited to just this presentation.)

Fantastic video Prof. Kastrup! Of all the possible Universes in which we came into existence, we will never know if it is a Universe in which we could become immortal, unless we discover the secret of immortality. And from what we know from other areas, this moment will almost necessarily be a singularity. And it will certainly have an infinite parameter. Will this be possible? Pasolini tells us that what we take to be true can only happen (due to constraints derived from Godel's incompleteness theorems) if somewhere in the past an infinite amount of information entered the human brain. Therein lies the singulariry! An infinite amount of information of a teleological nature and which constitutes the most basic and fundamental element of the Universe. Are we in the right Universe? The one where immortality is possible and inevitable?
